Comma, yes you did. I apportioned blame onto fat adults and parents and said it is up to them, not Big Gub, to sort themselves out.

Re: Fat People
Maybe using the yanks as an example of healthy living is stretching it a bit but the average US highschool probably has a swimming pool, a fully functional gym, and a sports team that draws crowds that dwarf a lot of high profile Premership football matches. You're encouraged from an early age to go out there and be the best at whatever you do.

I'd imagine the situation is similar in most countries across Europe.

The average school in the UK has access to a soggy bit of wasteland and the only sports the kids are allowed to play are netball and rounders. Competition is discouraged in case the one who doesn't win gets upset.

The main difference? The rest of the world doesn't have lefties and homosexuals running their education systems.

My sis works in a very middle class islington primary school full of kids called toby. Her husband takes the kids for football training after he's finished work because all the teachers there are women or gay so there's no one else who will do it

That is some generalising there mashed.

Yeah same with my school thinking about it.

PE just isn't taken seriously by our education system, probably cos our education system is run by women, gays and lifelong academics who look down on any form of physical activity.

Re: Fat People
sorry I was of course kidding...
So did the fight stop after theose things were banned?
(though not sure of the exercise value of top trumps and marbles is stretching it).

Re: Fat People
It's easy to apportion blame. The difficult bit is putting the wrongs right and to that extent I've not heard a blame apportioner come up with a solution.

When I was at school teachers, and not just the PE teacher, gave their own time to facilitating sports teams. Nowadays where I live it's mainly parents who pursue sports for their kids. In fact because of this there are more kids playing organised football than in my day when on a saturday it was all school teams and by their very nature they only consisted of the best players in the school. Now there is a plethora of football clubs for youngsters.

Not at all, we were only 9 or 10. Just had a school run by hand wringing leftie types

was there money riding on any of these activities bruuuno by any chance?

Re: Fat People
Football was banned at my school because it 'started too many fights'. Same went for marbles, top trumps, anything basically.

Re: Fat People
Not sure it was lefties who sold playgrounds mashed, but the current ambulance chasing litigating culture is Blairs fault.

As an aside I am assuming for those of you OK with the introduction of a fat tax, will also be happy with a minimum charge for alcohol..

Re: Fat People
My primary school stopped doing school sports day cos the new headteacher (a woman who almost certainly voted Labour) said that it would upset children who didn't win.

Says it all.

Re: Fat People
One thing I will say is partially not the parents' but society's fault is the suppression of physical activity in schools. I remember even when I was at primary school (nearly 20 years ago) there were stories about schools having to close their playgrounds cos so many parents threatened legal action when their previous little darling came home with a grazed knee etc. Also all the "no ball games" signs everywhere.

Again, lefties are to blame for this.

Re: Fat People
Nurse see my argument really was about that all along (re the fat tax issue).
In other respects I agree with you. I just bought a bag of apples and one of bananas for 2 quid. I totally agree responsibility should be on parents not not overfeed their kids. Portion sizes is a huge issue here too.

Re: Fat People
I am not advocating any sort of tax or ban, Debs.

I am advocating grown adults, and especially parents, should take independent responsibility for their lives and choices, regardless of income level. Antidiluvian notion, no doubt.

Re: Fat People
It's a fact that convenience meals are more unhealthy than home prepared meals. These ready or almost ready meals, along with the majority of take-away plates, are larded [ almost literally ] with unsaturated fats and unhealthy levels of salt.

Simply cutting out sugar laden soft drinks and snacks will not be an answer if the diet still mainly consists of non home prepared meals.

Re: Fat People
I was lucky enough to grow up in an "ethnic" household and because of it I do get my kids to eat as many fruit, veg and frsh food as I can for the money we have. There is evidence out there to supportr what I am saying that a fat tax is not the answer. Quite surprising that so many of you that are against high tax are perfectly happy to want to initiate a tax that will hit the poor the most.

Mashed, a slim person who does burn calories quickly (like a really close friend of mine) can be poorly nourished as an obese person She eats loads of junk food but is never above a size 10., but mostly is an 8.

Re: Fat People
Went for a kebab at lunch the other day.

Came to nearly 6 quid with a can of coke.

For 6 quid you could get a pack of mince, a few bits of veg and a bag of rice and knock up something that would give you enough for lunch for 3-4 days. And not heighten your chance of a heart attack.

BUT FAT PEOPLE ARE FAT COS THEY'RE POOR!!!!!!!!!!!!
